2-15-25: Did we already talk about the various fire traps, pit spike trap (kid thought the label was just a door), and 3 helmed horrors? Such a stalemate for so long,... sickening radiance could do dmg to them, but they saved like 90% of the time... but finally it all worked out.
- 1st fire trap (gargoyle type head) woulda done 26ish dmg, but warlock has resist fire... and saved for half again... and had the anti-fire-dagger which absorbs 4 fire DMG and heals 2 HP... so he literally got hit by the crazy trap and healed 1 HP. LOL.
- Druid wildshaped to get out of spike pit (he took a lot of dmg tho... I think 5d6 piercing).
- Another tricky fire trap right AFTER pit, he finally destroyed it with eldrich blast like the first trap.
- The blade trap... ouch. Decided it better be 3d6 on failed dex, b/c it was just about impossible to get helmed horrors to lay off the lever (which kept the trap(s) engaged).
- He was being cautious with the helmed horrors b/c didnt know how hard hit or how many HP. They certainly are as anti-magic as I recall reading from the old old monster manual in 3.5e. Since they are immune to force, his Energy Bow finally failed him... first time ever.
Written night of 2-16-25:
Deathlock Wight managed to fool the party, feigned trapped (disguised self spell as weary guy, mini with lantern).
Open door behind... gibbering mouther was waiting in disguise as pile of earth behind barrels.
HUGE monsterous spider 3x3 size up high hiding. Barbarian walked in, fighter walked in, Warlock behind them. Druid got ambused by DLWight (no hit).
- https://www.5esrd.com/database/creature/spider-huge/ plus the web attack from regular large spider.
Near End of first round, gibbering mouther made Barbarian crazy, he stood still.
Spider shot web missed. Next round it ran down and grapped Barbarian while Barb was Gibbering-confused/doing nothing. 15 foot reach and all. Pulls Barb in Took a bite too. Huge damage between all that on Barbarian, down to probably near half, and fails POISON save too. POISON = incapacitated/paralyzed while poisoned. Blinded, grappled, poisoned... all give you stuff like "enemy as adv roll attacks on you... you have disadv att roll in 5e" so naturally our hero figures... do Barbarian's reckless attack, which negates the likely double disadvantage (disadv+disadv+disadv? I do that right?) Barb has on att rolls and doesn't make the Advantage of enemy attacks against him any more Advantaged than they already are. Why subtract numbers in 3.5e when you can just cheez-it in 5e! :P
- Blinded = att rolls against have adv, your att rolls have disadv
- Grappled = speed is zero.
- Poisoned = A poisoned creature has disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks.
- But Reckless Attack gives you Advantage on 1st str attack (or negates a disadvantage)... and gives them Advantage on attacks against you.
- But in 5e if you have 1 or more things giving advantage, and 1 or more things causing disadvantage, you roll one d20, not two (one is enough to cancel out many of the opposite)... so a billion Disadv and one Adv turns into a normal roll of one d20.
Fighter goes, fails crazy save vs Gibbering... now he has to att random guy within reach. 50/50 who he hits... oh no, he'll hit the Barbarian. CRITICAL HIT, does big dmg!! Is the Barb going to be with us?~!
[was writing that during a short break during play]
OK, results?! All is well, even tho Barb went to zero and got stuck in a web for later eating... they nuked the big spider quickly after.
BTW. A Gibbering Mouther is confusing-to-DM = party member/PC apparently loses a turn when he goes crazy from the sounds, then the NEXT round the PC does the random action even if the Mouther is gone (so he the PC loses 2 turns if I am reading correctly).
