MAP3 is done - Strahd snuck up on them when they were fighting Dimitar and the endless skellies in the chapel, where they had used a corrupting magic on top of the Icon of Ravenloft to allow raising skellies.
The reason Strahd stayed out of the fight is he is scared of that Icon of R. & the chapel, ... knowing it can do great harm to him if he touches it (88 dmg) while on the altar. Generally doesn't like the chapel, that's why he used others to deal with it and used Dimitar to fight in there to try to defend it and prevent recovery of the Icon of R.
So Strahd appeared as a man-bat (showed picture of the 1990s Dracular Gary Oldman bat-hybrid monster)... he simply grabbed one summoned animal that was next to the exit hallway, sucked it's blood, and ray away. Also, this is useful to Strahd b/c the animals could trigger traps, and he wants traps to hit the party.
The kid also found a way to kill the statue-red-wyrmlings without taking much dmg. He witnessed the drawbridge being raised and the portcullis slamming shut at the front.
I think last weekend he saw the illusionary Strahd and the organ, etc.
So he's done with all the above ground levels of the castle. Only Map 11 and Map 12 (the crypt) to go!
