G3 Results so far- after tentacle wall

Shrineof the Eye (EEG) - was nice in creepy

  • Btw, mural shows 2 or 3 tentacle monsters. Are they followers of the EEG… or are their many avatars of him potentially?
  • The goodman games talking tsr dudes say it kinda implied more than one EEG

Tentacle wall… kid approached safely with summoned wolves touching it and activating it. Kid got outta way just in time.

Giant firey Plasm (skeletal, elemental fire evil) and two drow clerics plus Eclavdra. She got away. Kid nuked with a max cone of cold… killed clerics one ahot.

Plasm https://www.completecompendium.com/appendix/plasm/

  • Changed stats a little from plan… needed ~100hp.

G3, the ancient red dragon

Back in the day, this dragon had the max 88 hp, and so it did 88 dmg w breath weapon, half if saved. Wow! Magic useres would die back then.

Via goodman games talking tsr on yt.

*Put it in a larger cavern w a way out.

G3 so far - custom goblin area with drow with giant spider

 G3 so far -

The custom goblin area with 2 drow with giant spider... we'll say they were on the opposite side of Eclavdra... that other priestess, since they had a spider, they are following Lloth. One escaped, she'll warn the opposing side of this new party of apparent outsiders.

  • WHO has been semi-spying or learning of the troubles this (kid’s) party has made? I think Eclavdra. Would her team share info with the opposing drow team?
The goblins who escaped slave duty, only to die with the 1 drow and giant spider.
  • sets up the implication that more goblins (slaves) are around.

2024 D&D monster manual - troll is ai slop art

Disgusting ... super obvious ay-eye (ai) art. Blech. I'm just here to condemn it. :(  Pay real artists... the old TSR guys could afford it, and it matters. I paid for the 2024 monster manual from WotC, but nope... they've gone to far with this and the other non-gritty version of D&D. I mean kid-friendly stuff is fine, but the other stuff is way too far.

Deformed hand. No foot. Among other things.

Instead of the ay-eye slop, let's look at older art or this modern art which keeps with tradition:

https://dnd-wiki.org/wiki/Troll_Common_(5e24)

G3, Wererat tendencies, Titan tendencies

 The titan found

  • can do cleric spells up to level 6.
    • ***no need to add stone to flesh (our Druid can do it, rest to prepare or no rest?)
  • all titans are almost godlike and have a tendency to think they are above others (not including storm giants), but mostly think of them as bombastic Greek Gods like in the Clash of the Titans movie.
  • CG. Will help a party that rescues them. Might just leave abruptly though if inconvenienced/bored and figured they did enough, I say.
Wererats
  • see the adnd 2e wererats entry on fandom: https://adnd2e.fandom.com/wiki/Wererat
  • rats and mice 1d4 or 1d6, eh?, follow them often
  • they'd rather be with other wererats, only Alone when pretending to be human and setting up a trap/ambush/mischief.
    • "Wererats prefer to attack from ambush. A favorite tactic is to assume human shape and lure unsuspecting victims into a trap. This is the only time wererats are voluntarily alone. Victims are then robbed, held for ransom, or eaten."
  • turn into Ratmen, 2 foot long giant rats, human shape.
  • "In their ratman and giant rat forms, wererats can be hurt only by silver or magical weapons."
    • meaning human form takes normal dmg from anything
  • "Each wererat is able to summon and control 2-12 giant rats."
  • "Anyone who is injured by a true wererat has a 1% chance per point of damage of becoming a wererat. "

G3, Eclavdra fan 5e statblock

G3's Eclavdra, the drow leader (in opposition to that other drow priestess in another room).

I like this one pretty well, but will modify -

https://www.worldanvil.com/block/1265403

Let’s change these (keep in mind she wants to flee and live):

  • CR 20 is Way too high.
  • 363 hp seems way too high. I’d reduce that to 150hp maybe and give her 21 AC. It is 5e tho, so ridiculous HP is typical i guess.
    • maybe we'll pretend drow wizard cast Permanency on a HP increasing spell.
    • Consider a normal 5e drow priestess of Lolth is lvl 10, cr 8 or 9, has 16 AC, and 71 HP.
  • Dmg mistake?… I think 7+14 or 7+15 total is what they meant.
  • Taking psychic dmg when near her seems weird, remove
  • Spells and powers to be changed… she needs to feel like a drow cleric
  • *** see previous post yt. NoneofConsequence’s time 22:22 for list of cool dnd 1e drow items and spells. I like.
    • Drow cloaks and boots. Save +6 vs fire
    • Drow sleep poison.-4 on target save.
    • Death Lance. 10’ spear inflicts [4d6 is my modified]. Save vs. poison or lose 1d4 levels (changing to temporarily, gotta greater restore or rest a week).
    • Demon staff. Black leather-like staff carved w evil runes. Can only be weilded by cleric of Lolth.
      • 4d6 dmg, can only be healed 1hp per day.
      • Fear
      • Summon type 1 demon.
      • Turn into type 3 demaon for 5 rnds once per day.
    • Glass globe. Hurled w sling staff 90’ max and minimum 30’ range. Shatters, 10’ diameter vapor cloud… targets will
      • glow reducing AC by 1d4, lasts 1d4+1 turns (10 min is a turn). But water will wash it off.
      • Be blinded [1d4 +2… my adjustment for 5e] rounds doing nothing but scratching at their eyes, helpless. Water washes off but helpless [1 or 2 rnds regardless].  [DC 15 con save negates for 5e i say].
    • DROW COMMON SPELLS
      • Bless aoe. 20’ by 20’ area. Allies get +1 to hit, dmg, morale.
      • Blindness. Range 30 . Dispel magic removes.
      • Chill metal. 40’ range, weapons and metal armor. Aoe is 1 target per caster lvl. [changing for 5e to be… 1st and 5th round take 1d4 dmg. 2nd and 4th rnd take 1d6. 3rd rnd take 1d12 and risk frostbite extremities (ears, fingers etc. amputate). ]
      • Clairovoyqnce
      • Curse
      • Dancing lights
Maybe keep these crazy EEG fan spells
  • Elemental - i am going to have the Plasms from 2e.
  • ON YOUR KNEES! (EEG Domain, 1/day, as part of a melee attack). The target falls prone and cannot stand up (DC19 CHA saving throw at the end of the target's turn ends the condition).
  • BITTEN THREAD (EEG Domain, 1/day, as part of a melee attack). The giantess tentacle rod rips and tears at your soul. Bits of your spirit come out in bloody chunks. Take normal damage, plus age 1d4 years plus now in 1d10 * 1% Experience Point debt. Your next Experience Points gained go to repairing the wound in your soul. Your Experience Points do not go down; the next experience gained is lost. A CHA save halves the damage/effect.

Maybe keep these-

REACTIONS

Vindictive. As a reaction to being attacked, Eclavdra may - randomly - use any power tagged as "EEG Domain" even if it has already been used for the day.

LEGENDARY ACTIONS

Eclavdra can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn. She regains spent legendary actions at the start of her turn. Eclavdra may use her Speed if it allows her to use one of her legednary actions.

  • Compel Elemental. An allied elemental within 30 feet of Eclavdra uses its Reaction to make one attack against a target of Eclavdra’s choice that she can see. The elemental may move up to its speed to do this.
  • Tentacle Staff. Eclavdra makes one Tentacle Rod attack.
  • Cast a Spell. Eclavdra uses Spellcasting.
  • Kneel! Each creature she can see and of her choosing that can hear her must make a WIS saving throw or spend its next action kneeling and unable to do any other action.  Mechnically, if needed, the target gains the Prone condition for all other intents and purposes.

Fighting Fantasy Books - Art Museum on twitter

 https://x.com/FFMuseumOfArt

Has a ton of the original B&W art... so maybe I can finally read those new ones I bought (that have the terrible new art... so annoying).

Scared... kinda want to buy them but they said original art "WHEN available"... not so promising:

Dissolution Novel - Drow, best Magic-User Book I've read

Absolutely loved this novel, Dissolution. The main Drow Magic-user was very entertaining, and I got the impression the author actually "understood" the coolness of magic. Read it a couple of times. I remember that whole series was good, and I can't recall if the same characters are in all or half of those books.

I will say though, now that I'm finally reading some of the Dying Earth books (I'm on the first one), the first one absolutely blows me away with how cool the magic is. If only it wasn't so SciFi, but still excellent.

Also, the cover art is great.

https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Dissolution

Ideas from old Druids of Doom from JG

Druids of Doom from JG (Judge's Guild). 1970s. From Jennel Jaquays. This I think is the one I referenced one or 3 posts back where one of the original D&D guys redid it on his site, etc.

Great magic item ideas, I'll convert a few to 5e style:

  • The Staff of the Oak of the Gods
    • Usable by Druids only.
    • Indestructible. Cool backstory about druids so old, nobody currently knows what it was about (unknown ancient god or something). God battled near it... it absorbed their power. The oak grew to be ancient. Lightning hit the oak, made this staff.
    • Shoot lightning bolt 5 times a day. -> I'd convert it to doing DC 15 lightning bolt, 8d6 dmg.
    • Gives you 3 levels of Fighter -> I'd convert that to say +15 HP and +1AC and +1 to hit for 5e.
    • Does triple normal staff dmg.
  • Club of Vines
    • Usable by Druids only.
    • Wrapped in a single vine.
    • The club "breaks up on a hit", the vine comes out to play, becomes many, and entangles/restrains the target if you hit. Does dmg... we'll say 6HP of dmg for 5e. Keeps you restrained. We'll say auto-restrain for one round. DC 20 to break out next round and beyond.
      • does not prevent breathing, but can't move anything really.
    • Lasts we'll say 3 rounds max for 5e, then it lets go. Club reforms.
    • When you get out of it, 6HP of dmg again.  Club reforms.
    • Does not work against super duper big things (we'll say Huge in 5e scale).

Pool of Radiance:RoMD playable!!! And Temple of Elemental Evil PC game, classic, rereleased

https://store.steampowered.com/app/3843520/The_Temple_of_Elemental_Evil/

ToEE pc game. Tempting to get Just b/c I want to know more of the story. heh.

This is either the one I played and loved or one that is super close to it... I need to go back and double check. Kept thinking it was Pool of Radiance I liked (more tactical). I kinda think I might have played ToEE but didn't like it as much.

Crazy, it just got rereleased on Steam Dec 10th, 2025... a few days ago.

Wikiped says:

The Temple of Elemental Evil is a 2003 role-playing video game by Troika Games. It is a remake of the classic Dungeons & Dragons adventure The Temple of Elemental Evil using the 3.5 edition rules. This is the only computer role-playing game to take place in the Greyhawk campaign setting, and the first video game to implement the 3.5 edition rule set.

Pool of Radiance: RoMD playable today!!!!: https://collectionchamber.blogspot.com/p/pool-of-radiance-ruins-of-myth-drannor.html

OK, yeah, the one I played and loved was Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor, 2001, I recognize this cover and the scenes in the game:

G3's EEG's shrine, more descriptions, art references

Good and Real tentacle monster horror comic art here: https://whosoutthere.ca/2019/08/20/tentacle-tuesday-masters-tom-sutton/   and    https://whosoutthere.ca/category/tentacle-tuesday/

GreyhawkGrognard's G1 stuff is a good one, recap and explains more than the obvious: https://www.greyhawkgrognard.com/2008/06/10/thoughts-on-elder-elemental-god/

Another take on the EEG and the other related or whatever gods: http://www.canonfire.com/cf/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=9977

Maybe they'll have more here, see some non TSR EEG modules: https://urudnd.blogspot.com/2023/06/greyhawk-campaign-update.html

Below is mostly From 3Orcs blog (they have some Ay-Eye art, yikes): https://3orcs.blogspot.com/2024/11/embracing-chaos-elder-elemental-god-in.html

Features of Rentaq’s Shrines:

  • Unnerving Atmosphere: Use dim lighting, strange sounds, and otherworldly phenomena to set the tone.
    • My sub notes: (((Maybe do a -1 to hit or -1 concentration check for any of these relevant, but not cumulative. If player has a creative way around the issue, then no penalty anymore.)))
      • You hear dripping and squelching, coming from nowhere/everywhere, quietly. Then it stops.
        • Others didn't hear it that time.
      • You start to feel like snails or leeches are touching your hands, then your neck, but it's nothing really there.
      • Slightly dizzy and nauseated. -1 to hit or -1 concentration check
      • Starting to sweat so much it's getting in your eyes and you taste the salt on your lips.
      • Hands turning red and purple, uncomfortable. -1 to hit or -1 concentration check.
      • Ears start ringing very loudly for a few minutes. -1 wisdom-perception checks.
      • Random one second of sharp pain in your back, your foot, or around your heart.
  • Dangerous Rituals: Cultists might perform sacrifices or summon elemental horrors, challenging your players to intervene.
    • My sub notes:
      • Yes, I think the tail end of a ritual... those poor folks walking into it. BUT, I don't think the party can intervene. So... eh?
        • MAYBE a vision of the recent ritual, but it's not happening now.
          • They find leftover body parts. The arm with the tentacle (are they specifically like octopuses? remember they are HAIRY tentacles, so different at least that way) marks on it.
  • Corruption Effects: Exposure to Rentaq’s influence might curse or transform characters, adding stakes to their encounters.
    • My sub notes:
      • I mean... IF they touch the altar and stuff like that, G3 already has repercussions written down.

This part from GreyhawkGrognard's G1 stuff is a good one, recap and explains more than the obvious: https://www.greyhawkgrognard.com/2008/06/10/thoughts-on-elder-elemental-god/

Three things are significant about this appearance of the temple of what we will later know to be the EEG; the renegade orc slaves have blocked off the passage to it, there is apparently more to it which has been cut off by a (deliberate?) cave-in in area 18, and the fact that it has been abandoned in the first place.

The first is easy to explain; it is the hill giants, not the orcs, who were converted to the worship of the EEG, and thus they found the place disturbing enough to wall off once they occupied this section of the dungeon level. The second, I think, is deliberately vague, as we have no way of knowing what was or was not included in that caved-in section. Was it merely an extension of the temple, similar to what we eventually see in G3? Or does that caved-in section actually lead to a now-defunct passage into the Depths of the Oerth? If so, what caused its collapse? Such a connection is rank speculation, especially since the parallel temple complex in G3 does not, in fact, directly lead to the entrance to the Depths.

However, it does fit in with my own speculation that the whole campaign of the drow House Eilservs to use the giant clans in their war of conquest came from the burrowers below. That is, the unknowing hill giants were one day confronted with a newly-created tunnel to the Depths, whence came Eilservs ambassadors bearing gifts and promises of easy loot. On[c]e the hill giants were in their thrall, they moved on to the frost giants (there is a puzzlingly similar collapsed tunnel, sans the EEG paraphernalia, in area 4A of the lower level of “The Glacial Rift of the Front Giant Jarl”), abandoning the EEG temple beneath the Steading once they didn’t need to directly control the hill giants, but could do so through their stronger cousins, the frost giants. And ditto for the Fire Giants.

Which brings us to said fire giants. In G3, “Hall of the Fire Giant King” (and note how the title progresses from “chief” to “jarl” (=earl) to “king”), we are treated to our fullest description and explanation of the whole Temple of the Eye (which, of course, is how the fane of the EEG is referred to). Areas 9-11 of the second level; the Temple of the Eye.

... "and a conversion to the worship of the EEG was part of the Eilserv’s plot all along;"

So from what he says, I follow and agree with a lot. The part I might change (is this actually a change?) would be... they abandoned the Hillgiants and Frostgiants ... and the Drow openly attend (I'm putting it in our game) worship at the G3 Firegiant area, at the Temple of the Eye (the EEG's temple).

Free Replace Q1 with Q2, d4 for d3, fan made by GreyhawkGrognard

Might be good. Q1 has issues they say. I have another post talking about another fan replacement btw semi recently.

https://www.greyhawkgrognard.com/2022/02/08/q2-web-of-souls/

(((Be careful still has a “spaceship” type thing…. Commenter says “ Loved the Lolth Spaceship wrecked against the dwarven stronghold.”

Once we get past D1-3… we r real close, halfway thru G3!

…..,

Here is his d4 replacement for d3… easier for a DM… more narrow… https://www.greyhawkgrognard.com/2020/12/11/d4-city-of-spiders-now-available/

Art inspires my d&d, metal music 2

Look at the metal band Bathory’s album “under the sign of the black mark”

I think that’s a crazy cultist in some Conan-ish cave.

See yt of “every metal subgenre by Hallows” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdtBUC1hqus

G3 foreshadowing.Secret door. Secret passage, goblins

 Tell kid

  • Once in a while, rumbling… mini earthquake? Maybe related to the volcano, but seems mild.
    • This is to account for cave-in behind goblins… way behind. I just don’t want to turn it into an underdark tangent.
    • How many drow? Are they there still, yeah.
  • Secret door… you find a human finger sized groove. (Giants wont notice, AND, too small for them to accidentally trigger.)
    • Touch one inch into it, an elvish(? Drow) sigil glows purple, the slowly, quietly the door opens.
    • Same groove on other side.
  • Secret passage, 50 ft along, nobody.
    • Find dirty cloth left on ground 40 ft along
    • Way later. The bat hears speaking (goblins).
  • Goblins
    • Don’t look same as usual. Clothing is not battle ready.
    • Shackles on wrists, lightweight. Chain broken and dangling.
    • They hold small pickaxes
,,,,,,,,,,,,, later below
  • Search fallen drow mages
    • Staff w spider motif
    • Spellcasting components
    • Peculiar token inscribed w strange symbols

 Tenkar’s again https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dW4O_wSs9M&list=LL&index=1&t=303s&pp=gAQBiAQB

D6

  1. Fresh marks on stone (scrapes, chalk, soot).WHAT IT SUGGESTS recent activity. TWIST - continues out of sight.
  2. Dropped fragment.(metal, wood, cloth) SUGGESTSsigns of conflict or haste. TWIST bears an unfamiliar mark
  3. Stains or smears (dark or odd residue) SUGGESTS someone or something was injured TWIST warm or cold to the touch
  4. Scattered remains (shells, bones, shards) SUGGESTS long abandoned area TWIST rearranged since last pass
  5. Etched symbol or pattern SUGGESTS lingering magic or ritual TWIST glows or reacts near flame or iron
  6. Stout threshold (door, arch, grate) SUGGESTS HIDDEN MECHANISM OR barrier. TWIST faint whisper or draft beyond
My ideas- for hinting Drow and Underdark stuff. G3 and maybe D1.
  1. Fungus spore dust found in giant area dungeon. From Drow underdark or Myconoids.
  2. Rocks or broken bits of stone found. Do not match current G3 black lava rocks. Came from other place… came from Underdark.
  3. An illithid tentacle, dried up and attached to … a broken belt. It was keepsake of a burly Bugbear who is a  drow slave warrior, atypical guy, who helped kill one. Now where is he and hwat happened.
  4. A tiny 8 inch arrow bolt.  From a drow single hand crossbow.
  5. When find goblins, one has a tiny 8 inch arrow bolt stuck in his leathery tunic or boots… missed his skin recently.
  6. Find a weird piece of thick shell. Nearby are fork and spoon.  It’s from a giant snail… underdark. Used as a plate or bowl until broken.
  7. Random backpack style bag found. Maybe other adventurers, now dead or enslaved.
  8. Find EEG (Elder Elemental God) insignias somewhere. On wall? On a robe?
  9. Find old half arm of human… kept in alcohol to preserve… weird suction cup patterns on skin.  (The EEG). Giants were keeping it as a memorial after a sacrifice.

  • When walking around lava rocks, move slow. If move fast, roll 1d12, on a 1 or 2 you take 1d6 dmg from scrape… also on a 1 you fall to knees.

The Dungeon Dozen, blog here or buy https://roll1d12.blogspot.com/

Example for getting to next dungeon level

d12
1. Subterranean ravine, rushing water below, other side featureless stone, series of incredibly narrow switchbacks hewn into wall below, must go mountain goat-style, ravine subject to distracting pterodactyl infestation
2. Small room with no floor, after obscene number of golden coins deposited into slot in corridor pressurized air blasts from below, works as per feather fall, return trip air blasts as per levitate, costs 1d4 times as much
3. Giant in sumo wrestler's diaper w/Mardi Gras papier mache head greets you as you approach vast aperture in floor leading to next level, negotiates round trip passage rate, picks up PCs in groups of two, passes them to giant on ledge below who passes to next giant down and so on, final giant deposits group on next level and wishes them well, they take long meal breaks during which they cannot be bothered
4. Giant worm bridge spans chasm, enter through mouth, exit to stairway down via cloaca, enterprising worm-trainer sells bucket loads of worm chow from reeking barrels to sprinkle along the way, worm is telepathic but dog-like intellect precludes stimulating conversation
5. When activated from wall panel using proper key, stair opens accordion-like from wall of otherwise empty shaft, automatically retracts in 10 minutes, different key needed for return trip

Morale check w 2d6

 Reminder from B/X, see Tenkar’s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_wY-dP17e8

Roll 2d6. Before initiative

2 immediate action

3-5 hostile, possible attack

6-8 uncertain, monster confused

9-11 no attack, monster leaves or considers offer

12 enthusiastic friendship

And.. players can do something to get a plus 1 modifier  example, offer food, show respect, speak their language, etc

Keep in mind, some monsters are never gonna be friends… reroll if get 12 on them. Etc.

AoE spell dmg, CORRECTION, dbl if

So moonbeam or cloudkill… “ creature takes damage if it moves into the area or if it starts to turn there. That means it will take double damage if it’s pushed into that area, bcuz takes dmg once, then again when turn starts.

Tenkar’s 3 layer encounter

 Excellent examples

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqSeGMi5S1I&t=313s

Like, lauer 1, what they see and hear.

  • a goblin in forest waving dirty white cloth.
Layer 2, the truth
  • Really he is singnallimg his trine to circle and attack you
Layer 3, what happens when retreats or oddball dice
  • He retreats… but into a trapped deadfall. Scared but he must maintain.

Or… 3 goblins arguing. But rly they are scared of a big monster.  If they retreat from party, end up dragging party into big monster they were running from.

G3 ideas. New passage goblins, ... Knights of Myth Drannor

My idea… new side passage secret small but party finds. Goblins. Arguing. Really they are escaping a monster.   Maybe a otyugh or gelat cube. Point is tho, a whole goblin area becuz been getting scraps from giants or whatever. Leads to underdark, eh? But a cave-in (there was a rumble and shaking due to volcano earlier), so they got trapped. Party can use as sleeping rest base. IF not caught.

  • PBetter yet, they r running from drow. Originally this a drow spying area, but goblins found it. Now drow are clearing the, out.
  • Plasms introduced here? Or not enuf fire? Not dramatic enough?

Link to the Knights of Myth Drannor: https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Knights_of_Myth_Drannor

Thanks to ashockney who mentioned them here, what a cool idea: https://www.enworld.org/threads/leading-up-to-and-then-running-g1-g3-for-3-5-advice-needed.123718/

can spice it up a little, and possibly add some much-needed support, by introducing a competing party...say the Knights of Myth Drannor. Very typical of the FR, and would make for many cool cameos. It would be very unlikely that someone wouldn't want to get involved from the various power groups in the FR, and identify/partner with the Drow and their mission. Perhaps even an all-elven strike force sent to eliminate the threat....and they're not too friendly with any non-elves, for that matter.

So how would the knights appear at the right time?

  • They were scrying on the progress, and realized they had to make way to G3 area b/c the kid's party was doing so well.
  • Maybe a powerful wizard tported them there.

Here's a fun run through, whole website dedicated to Against The Giants to: https://www.againstthegiants.com/chapters/chapter_3/day1part4meetsnure/
  • Note, that was interesting to make them think the pyrohydra was a straight Dragon.
  • ANOTHER HYDRA(?). Yep confirmed on Day 2, there is another one in these guys ran at least. I was already planning for a second one myself.
    • OhhoooOOOhhhh, they are using normal hydra, b/c 5e didn't ahve pyroHydras.
      • proof: Remember to burn them!” and shoots a bolt of fire at the hydra, while Fennuris follows with flaming arrows. ADC then summons a fire elemental that swiftly dispatches the hydra.
  • Leomund's tiny hut
  • Gnolls with Ballista (this was near the Ombi bad dwarf)

G3 thoughts on Giants... 5e comparing to 2e statblock

UPDATE, read this  (referencing 3e HP increase) and this, by Superdan.

Well I knew giants had crazy high HP in 5e, but I just got around to comparing damage... and well, giants hit like 3 or 4 times as hard (including frequency) in 5e, while characters may or may not have 3 or 4times the HP. Damn the changes through versions.

Conclusion, yeah, I probably need to sometimes tone down the number of giants from 1e and get closer to how many they suggest in 5e I guess. Even though the party is over-leveled a bit, still, gotta watch out.

https://adnd2e.fandom.com/wiki/Hill_Giant

also comparing to a green dragon, and the dragon does WAY more melee damage than a hill giant in 2e. Which I tend to agree with, so what the heck is going on in 5e? I swear, they just buffed everything that looked like a human regardless of size:

https://adnd2e.fandom.com/wiki/Green_Dragon_(Creature)

SO the 2e hill giant is doing

  • 1-6 or by weapon (2-12+7), I think that means 2-12+7 with a typical weapon. ~13 dmg avg maybe, But only one attack.
  • Hurling rocks for 2-16 (2d8)  for ranged. ~avg 9 dmg i think.
5e hill giant gets two melee attacks so
  • 3d8+5 times 2 ~~~18 dmg on avg times TWO though. And you hit WAY more frequently in 5e.
  • 3d10+5 for one ranged attack, avg 21 dmg.

Tenkar’s… 3 mega dungeons

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNRFuBSMLx0

  • Stonehell - BX feel.Easier for new DM.
  • Castle of the Mad Mage - based on Gygax castle.  Is adnd and is Gonzo, weird.  But great .
  • Barrowmaze - a maze under a barrow. Undead. I have heard lots.

More great megadungeons in comments =

  • Arden Vul and Rappan Athuk
    • AV is more than 780 pages, ouch.
    • Rappan Athuk has a Sword and Wizardry version, but it started life as a 3rd/3.5ed D&D mega-dungeon, just for context. (There is also a 5e version too)
    • Ardun Vul (which I own in print and have yet to fully read) I'd likely need to run through an AI service just to bring it to manageable pieces I could digest in my lifetime ;) I ran some Rappan Athuk about a decade ago using S&W, and it was a blast.
  • I'm running Stonehell as my first megadungeon. It's extremely easy to use at the table for a new GM.
  • I love Stonehell, some of the most memorable Adventuring I have ever experienced, but it utterly falls apart on Level 10 - though I doubt that many will ever get that far.
I might try the easiest one out as the kid to DM, if he would. Or maybe I'll DM again.

DnD Blogger, and EEG backstory like cool crazy stuff

ELDER ELEMENTAL GOD

EEG = Elder Elemental God, the one that appears in the G3 module. It might or might not (Gygax says not) the same as the Elder Elemental Eye or Tharizdun. But the author of the blog says he thinks they are the same.

The Gygax quote from 2003 that says:

There is far less written about the Elder Elemental God than there is the Elder Elemental Eye (Tharizdun), presumably because Gary Gygax had not developed the idea until later, when writing WG4 The Forgotten Temple of Tharizdun.
The question need be asked: If the Elder Elemental Eye was Tharizdun, was the Elder Elemental God Tharizdun?
"No, the Elder Elemental God I envisaged as an entity of vaguely Chronos-like sort, a deity of great power but of chaotic sort, and not always highly clever in thought and action. Big T on the other hand is the epitome of pure, reasoning and scheming evil. Eclavdra, being more of the mold of Tharizdun, would prefer to have as "master" a powerful deity she might hope to influence, thus the EGG."
Gary Gygax ("Col_Pladoh"), 10th January, 2003, Q&A with Gary Gygax Part I, Enworld.

BTW, I love his quote, Byron always had good stuff:

“There is a pleasure in the pathless woods,
There is a rapture on the lonely shore,
There is society, where none intrudes,
By the deep sea, and music in its roar:
I love not man the less, but Nature more”

― Lord Byron

Not the EEG, but I can stomach this picture. From here

MY ANALYSIS / EXPLANATION

So the confusion is that the symbol, the triangle with the point down with the inverted Y in it (through it?) is mentioned in G3, with the EEG, but also later they mention that same symbol in some other situations not precisely the EEG. Wikipedia I think had it listed under the Elder Elemental Eye and somewhere about Tharizdun. So some authors are saying they are the same, Gygax is saying not the same. So, how do we deal with this? Maybe:

  • OPTION 1 - we say that the followers of such a mysterious evil entity ... entities... don't really ever know which one they are following. They get the symbols confused just like we do today.
    • similar to real religions, sometimes they absorb pieces of other religions. They tie things together to get more worshippers.
      • Kinda like "Oh, you want to keep doing Halloween... yeah we are totally OK with that. And (later) here's All Souls Day and All Saints Day, by the way".
        • Except, whoops, that whole thing might be wrong, according to this scholar. Halloween might be Christian first. Maybe. See here.
          • Michael says: “This is a really interesting question. Is it a pre-Christian festival as some scholars maintain or is it just, as the name implies, the eve of all hallows or all saints”    “Now, our sources for this are all late, they all come from Ireland and they all come from when the Irish had been Christians for 500 years. So, I think enormous pinches of salt are needed when asserting if Halloween is a pre-Christian festival that was co-opted by the Christian Church.”
      • Or in Japan, the sort of mix of Buddhism and Shintoism... I mean I guess they are separate, but it seems like a lot of people do both. Bad example maybe, a better example is the way Buddhism has Hell scenes... but so does Christianity and Judaism and etc.. Somebody borrowed from somebody else way back when, I would bet a lot on that: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naraka_(Buddhism).
      • I've also read that older deities become demons when referenced in other religions or later religions. Easy to see why, in some cases, with the child sacrifices and other utterly horrible things that actually happened (with archeological evidence) in the past. See here and here.
    • As in, the symbol got mixed up and shared amongst many cults.
  • OPTION 2 - Or maybe they are all aspects of the same God-being-thing. It certainly doesn't need to be neat, and it's more interesting if it is mysterious and messy, IMO.
    • A simple real life comparison is the holy trinity in Christianity, I think.

OTHER STUFF

I better read all of this: https://davidleonard-greyhawkmusings.blogspot.com/2020/10/history-of-south-east-part-10-uncertain.html

  • So I'm looking for Elder Evil God part 1 (found it, link above). But when I found that History of South East ... the black Ziggurat art got my attention:

  • Related but not precisely the same thing.
  • It's the Temple of Elemental Evil (T1-4) published in 1985 [yes Gygax was still w/ TSR] and Vault of the Drow (D3) published in 1978.
  • I think they are going with the EEG = the Elder Elemental Eye = Rentaq

Love the 1970s vibing music on the trailer, top fking notch. Tarantino- esque.

D&D Inspiration - tree roots forming Arches - Nurse Logs

The picture says it all. This guy is in Canada and says this happens with nurse logs and nurse stumps even. Basically, old logs end up being a useful spot for new trees to start growing due to no competition at that moment (maybe 10-20 years after it fell?). In this picture, there are 3 trees that were all on the same log, so they have these arches in a row. Over a very long time the roots get bigger and bigger and eventually should close the gap (a LONG time).

How's this apply to D&D?

  • Foxes, wolves, bears, etc. like to sleep under them in Real Life he says.
  • I can see fey creatures hiding in them easily.
  • Snakes and other venomous or poisonous things could be lurking.
  • Goblins could easily hide in there, ambush.
Another type.

The other type is where the tree grows over a (stump?) and eventually has a hollow part in the bottom. Reminds me a lot of cypress trees that get hollowed out over time (or did they indeed grow that way partially b/c of a nurse stump??? It'd have to be natural stumps though, so I kinda think cypresses are different).

Tenkar’s Cavern - dungeon design

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ayYBNCc-9VY

(And this has overlap https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llvjPbJdFro)

He’s got some good stuff. Here he says 3 main things, OSR especially-

  • Loops
  • Telegraphing
  • And breathing life into the dungeon (make it alive)

Loops, ok… hidden passages etc. And loops in paths coming back to familiar rooms.
  • Give a shorter but more dangerous route option, make it obvious.
  • Longer route is ok, but torch timers.

Telegraphing
  • Pit trap
    • Dust patterns shift
    • A faint draft rises from cracks
    • Scratched stone that hints at past victims
    • The torchlight disappears into blackness beneath the flagstone
  • Other trap
    • Scorch marks
    • Dampness
    • Dried blood or a dried corpse from before [mine, used before]
  • Monster nearby
    • Strange smells
    • Claw marks
    • Half eaten meals
    • A rhythmic thumping echo
  • Treasure
    • A glint under the rubble
    • A recent footprint
    • Soot(?) that isn’t as old as the rest . ??? [couldn't follow him here]
Make it alive. Motion
  • Dripping water
  • Distant clanging
  • Warm or cold air currents
  • Rats bolting past in fear of something
  • Chanting from deeper holes
Make it alive, Factions and territory
  • Factions n territory
    • Ex, goblins avoid undead rooms.
    • Ex a cult in lower levels.
  • A beast that denies passage
Rooms exist in 3 states, normal, disturbed, or reacting. Example… patrols doubled bcuz party. Boss moves new area. Smoke alters navigation bcuz they made fire.

NKHerping guy goes to S. africa

He just went.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVPvIIOECmI&t=838s&pp=0gcJCSMKAYcqIYzv

  • Up close elephants.
  • Giant scorpions.
  • Whip scorpion (wait, we have em in west texas?! In th US)

G3 next time - including the horrible 3 squid-monsters (not squids)

Have it so some other mobs moving in trying to take over? Or is it too soon. ?

Maybe do more pyrohydras plus giants same time.

Read this blog about the temples and Eclavdra and connections to Keep'Borderlands, oh man such good stuff, G3 is going to be memorable for sure: https://davidleonard-greyhawkmusings.blogspot.com/2020/10/on-green-god-and-elder-evil-part-2.html

g3 ideas next time

  • a door puzzle to open. gotta punch giant-height button. think like a giant.
  • drow main villain "appears". maybe in a crystal ball speaking to them or similar.
  • main drow wants to bribe them, when seen face to face. her side. Lol, the party won't go for it But she'll try.
  • Plasmhttps://www.completecompendium.com/appendix/plasm/ Have Drow summon one. It's SUCH a cool monster fight, I think it'll have to be very separate from the tentacle wall, huh?

    • Magical weapons have limited effectiveness on the creature. Each blow from a magical weapon causes only its magical damage, ignoring the normal weapon damage and any Strength bonuses. For example, a +5 holy avenger would inflict only 5 points of damage on a plasm.
      • So how to beat, other than spells? I think I'd allow +2 magic weapons to do 8 damage, and +1 to do 4 dmg. BUT WAIT, it loses a HitDie every round it's not healing up from fire. And in 2e it only heals 1 HP a round (maybe I'd do 2 HP for 5e).
        • ***but when it looks at the Energy BOW, it is scared! The Bow starts to hum loudly! It wants to attack it!
          • The Energy BOW does full dmg to it, special like!
        • Oh, and it'll die in X number of rounds anyway, if not sitting in fire. See details in statblock below.
        • But the DROW might cast a Fireball at it?! At the least, there will be a fire lava type thing in the room it will be touching during the start of the encounter... make it obvious, this is how it feeds itself.

  • Statblock for 5e will be (of my own design based on that 2e link):
    • Giant version of it (we have a giant skellie in the kid's rm)
    • No. appearing 1d4
    • AC is 18
    • Hit Dice are 12 so... we'll go with max of that for 5e =
    • 72 HP
    • To Hit: +10
    • Dmg/att (2 att.s): 4d6 claw (each)   (((up from 3d6 in 2e)))
    • Special att: Elemental cloud, see below.
    • No magic resist.
    • 12' tall.
    • XP = ~9,000~
    • Special defense:
      • Magical weapons have limited effectiveness on the creature. Each blow from a magical weapon causes only its magical damage, ignoring the normal weapon damage and any Strength bonuses. For example, a +5 holy avenger would inflict only 5 points of damage on a plasm.
        • For 5e, we'll say +2 magic weapons to do 8 damage, and +1 weapons to do 4 dmg.
        • ***but when it looks at the Energy BOW, it is scared! The Bow starts to hum loudly! It wants to attack it!
          • The Energy BOW does full dmg to it, special like!
    • On any plane except the Ethereal and the creature's own home plane, a plasm loses one Hit Die per round from energy drain, vanishing into nothingness when dead. However, a plasm can feed on its own element, and regenerates damage at the rate of 1 hit point per round when feeding on that element. A feeding plasm can do nothing else that round.
    • Fire spells feed it, we'll go with 5HD for fireball in 5e, but if upcast (Warlock) it'll gain more. AD&D2e_Example: a fireball cast by a 5th level mage gives a fire plasm a bonus of 5 Hit Die, a 6th level fb from a wand would give 6 Hit Die (in AD&D 2e terms).
    • Elemental Cloud: Once per turn, a plasm can “spend” 10 of its hit points to create an elemental cloud. This cloud is 30 feet in diameter and is centered on the plasm. Except for the plasm, any creature within the cloud suffers 20 points of damage per round; a successful saving throw vs. breath weapon halves the cloud's damage. The cloud lasts 1d6 rounds. Normally, a plasm uses this attack form when fleeing, though if it has gained extra Hit Dice as a result of opponents' foolish element-based attacks, it may choose to “spend” its hit points with very little provocation.
    • Ecology: Plasms, being extraplanar creatures, have no place in the environments of the Prime Material Plane, but can serve as destructive forces. Plasms derive sustenance from bits of their respective elemental matter.
Eclavdra notes

More clues
  • Wax stamp on scrolls same as before.
  • Name of Eclavdra seen.
  • Another weird hidden shrine to evil is coming yeah? What is around that shrine?

This scene in room 10 is ... horror. (He draws it in "Rm 9", west wall, due to perspective)

Yes, room 10 with the three ghastly tentacle monsters eating self-sacrificing creatures of nearly every race is disturbing. Why do they just stand there letting it happen?!?! Quote:

The wall to the east shows a scene of various creatures crawling, then creeping, up to huge, vaguely squid-like creatures with 10 hairy tentacles. In the forefront of this mass self-sacrifice are elves and men, but there are also dwarves, gnolls, orcs, trolls, halflings, ogres, goblins, etc. amongst the crowd. Those near the monsters are being torn apart and the bloody gobbets eaten as dainty morsels. There are 3 of these ghastly things, mottled in various shades and tints of purple and violet.

More Jack Vance stuff - D&D's magic, Gibbering Mouther

Just read this, says it all probably. : https://screenrant.com/dnd-magic-vance-dying-earth-dungeons-dragons-wizard/

I'm finally getting aroudn to reading stuff myself, see a post 2 or 3 back, very very very entertaining and interesting so far.

Gibbering mouther origins might be Jack Vance. In the first Dying Earth story, he mentioned a thing "all eyes". And then look at this old book cover:

Words - erudite

Erudite - having or showing knowledge that is gained by studying (says m-w.com)

Erudite derives from Latin eruditus, the past participle of the verb erudire, meaning "to instruct." A closer look at that verb shows that it is formed by combining the prefix e-, meaning "missing" or "absent," with the adjective rudis, which means "rude" or "ignorant." (Rudis is also the source of the English word rude.) We typically use rude to mean "discourteous" or "uncouth" but it can also mean "lacking refinement" or "uncivilized." Taking these meanings into account, erudite stays true to its etymology: someone who is erudite has been transformed from a roughened or uninformed state to a polished and knowledgeable one through a devotion to learning.
