Interesting article. 5 tropes/things DMs typically do, but not so great. I tend to agree.

- Capture. Only if it happens naturally, don't ever plan it, right?
- Friend betrays party. It just makes players not trust DM.
- Taking party gear. Holy crap, yeah I never did this, just feels super dirty. Maayyybe if I were to allow them to get it back, but never a permanent take, huh?
- Main villain escaping is tricky. Did the DM bend rules to get him out? Good points, read more of what DMDavid has to say.
- Something Hunting the Party. Interesting. Yeah, I don't what my players feeling like they are constantly "losing" and can't accomplish anything, running scared.
And holy cow, that's the DMDavid with the beautifully archived dungeon tiles. Thank you!
And he's got a nice physical 3d map thing that looks easy and fun: https://dmdavid.com/tag/simple-builds-that-make-multi-level-battles-extraordinary/
Btw the d20play guys just did a thing with Treantmonk. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gi00RdBzy_o&list=LL&index=17&t=1649s&pp=gAQBiAQB0gcJCccJAYcqIYzv
