Via old medieval art, you can see them draw flowers like that. Fluer de lis. Hell, Fluer must mean flower in French or something, hah.
See top right blue flowers... and on youtube there are some marginal art ones that look 100% like the fluer de lis (aka, the flower of the lily, i have found out). I had always thought it was a stabby axe halbert type shape as a young'un.
